Mental Health for Children & Youth

Mental health and mental illness, just like physical health and physical illness, are issues for all of us. What if we each could adopt an ethic that "we are all a little mentally ill: it's just a matter of to what varying degree." Reducing the stigma on mental health issues would benefit all of us.

Mental health issues are a common concern for every family around the world. We all want our children to grow up healthy and well-balanced! Disorders such as depression and bipolar moods, schizophrenia, panics and anxiety, obsessive compulsion, and attention deficit/hyperactivity can seriously affect school performance and engagement -- and can include complications from physical health issues, chemical/drug use, and complicated peer and family relationships.

Stages of growth and development are of critical importance in understanding children's mental health issues. For example, extreme highs and lows are often typical for adolescents with their "raging hormones." Extreme highs and/or lows that last for more than a few days in a row may indicate other problems. Getting answers to what is normal and what is not can be very helpful.

In additional to the resources listed below, this website shares information on four mental health issues for children and youth: ADD/ADHD, depression, eating disorders and self-injury.
