Domestic Violence

If you are experiencing domestic abuse, know that you are not alone. It affects families, children, partners and spouses. Over time, abusive behavior increases in frequency and severity. Anyone in a violent relationship needs support.

If you suspect that someone you know is in a domestic violent relationship, ask a local crisis center for information, support and ideas. Even when you know what to look for, it can still be hard to know for sure that someone is in a violent relationship. The person might deny there's a problem. And you could be mistaken. But be concerned if you stop hearing from the person or if the partner tries to keep you away. Try to keep in touch. Call or check in often.

The worst thing you can do as a friend is give up. Don't judge the person if she doesn't leave. Try to listen. Help the person get professional help. This could be from a women's shelter, therapist, counselor, doctor, lawyer, police or clergy. Help the person find resources to help with childcare, medical and legal issues. Call local hotlines for information and phone numbers of agencies. If alcohol and other drugs seem to be part of the problem, say so. Suggest that the person think about getting help.

Anyone in a violent relationship needs a plan for when things get out of control. You can help the person put a plan together. The plan should include:

  • A safe, secret place to go. This can be a friend, relative's home, or women's shelter.
  • A bag packed with clothes and money that can be kept in both a safe place or with a friend.
  • A list of important phone numbers: police, shelters, counselors, therapists, friends and/or relatives.
  • A way to call 911 or the police.
  • A contact at a local crisis center who can advise on all the options.
